March — Gardener’s calendar

 

In March, the seeds of many vegetables can be sown directly in the ground in milder areas. In colder places or on heavy, wet soils, wait until April or start seed under cover.

Sow in greenhouse or polytunnel: rapini

AMARANTH/BEETROOT FAMILY

Sow direct: beetroot (from mid-month); chard & leaf beet (from mid-month); spinach

Harvest: chard & leaf beet; winter spinach


ONION FAMILY

Sow in trays or pots: leeks

Sow direct: garlic, onion & shallot sets; bulb onion seed (from mid-month); spring onions

Harvest: leeks (to mid-month)


PEA & BEAN FAMILY

(Leguminosae)
Sow in trays or pots: broad beans; smooth-seeded peas

Sow direct: broad beans; smooth-seeded peas


CARROT FAMILY

(Umbelliferae)
Sow in trays or pots (under heat): celeriac; celery

Sow direct: carrots (from mid-month); parsnips; root parsley (from mid-month)


POTATO FAMILY

Sow in trays or pots (under heat): aubergine; sweet & chilli peppers (to mid-month); tomatillo; tomatoes

Sow direct: first & second early and maincrop seed potatoes (from mid-month)

Sow in trays or pots: chicory; endive; lettuce

Sow in greenhouse or polytunnel: chicory; endive; lettuce

Harvest: minutina (from mid-month); sorrel, winter purslane

PERMANENT CROPS

Asparagus: plant crowns in well-prepared weed-free soil
Jerusalem artichokes: harvest
Rhubarb crowns
Raspberry canes

TASKS

Warm soil for early crops with horticultural fleece
Weed fruit crops & spread compost around them
Prune apple trees, pear trees, currant bushes & gooseberry bushes whilst still dormant
